fun legacy decks

My Rating: 1. I will predict that the coupling of Deathrite Shaman + Brainstorm decks will continue to trend upward. With Death and Taxes, things are different. Simply put, Grixis Delver is the most efficient package that gets the most out of playing the two best cards in the format. Miracles is likely one of the decks that continues to get better as more deck builders gravitate toward pairing Brainstorm and DRS. The decks that don’t play Brainstorm but play DRS tend to be (with the exception of Elves) creature decks: Nic Fit, Jund, Death and Taxes. Is that too much? Community Rating: 3.1 In fact, I’d say that it might be even harder if you’ve played a lot. In that sense, it’s another deck where you could say “easy to play, but hard to master,” except it’s not actually that easy to play. Pro Rating: 2.3 The deck is also very hard to play against control decks, especially post-board. An inherently powerful strategy that is poised to be a counter to the emergent metagame is another reason to take a wait-and-see approach to banning DRS. As a general rule, I think that to play the blue decks, you have to be skilled and experienced with the game, regardless of how much experience you have with the blue decks themselves. He has three Grand Prix Top 8s with a win in Boston-Worcester in 2012. We have a 275 yard outdoor driving range. People are entitled to complain: “The format is overwhelmingly defined by these decks that start with the same 16 cards.” In fact, it’s actually worse than that once you take into consideration that various fetches and keystone dual lands will typically up that overlap closer to 50%. Community Rating: 1.91 ... Have fun browsing the latest gift card giveaways. For a better explanation of what deck difficulty even means, why it’s useful to figure out, and how the system works in general, you can refer to the first article here. randeng 5 years ago #1. You want to do the same against everyone every game. I think that the numbers are convincing enough that the average player will be more incentivized to jump in than jump off. A lot of your Brainstorms are pretty easy since you have redundant lands or combo pieces too. The combination of a complicated plan A, the existence of viable plans B and C, and the multitude of tutors makes me think that you should not play Elves in a tournament unless you’re very experienced with Elves, regardless of your familiarity with Magic and with the format. Esper Stoneblade: 3% It’s also different than a deck like Belcher because, if you’re playing Belcher, well, it’s not getting any better for you, you have to just go for it and hope they don’t have it, but with a deck like Storm you have the tools to beat counterspells, so sometimes it’s better to wait even if you theoretically could combo off. The downside is that a lot of decks start with the same 25 cards. Community Rating: 3.78 These are not cards that players can just spam until the opponent dies to them like Survival of the Fittest or Sensei’s Divining Top. I think Sneak and Show is the best “introductory blue deck” in Legacy. Always keep that in mind when selecting your weapon of choice. It’s not just sideboard cards—a deck that struggles against major pillars of the format (fast combo or counterspells) will have scores that reflect these inflexibilities. We collect MTG top decks for Standard, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pioneer and many other formats. Decks Fun/Casual Decks . I would not register any of them for a tournament unless I had a ton of time to practice. The dream deck is one that can quickly and consistently put itself into victory formation without being too vulnerable to cards and strategies people are likely to play. Deck list. There are different angles to exploit. Legacy Deck of the Day. In this article, the grading follows the same system. Brainstorm and DRS are neck-and-neck in terms of being the most played spells. We are the place for you to have fun, or work on your game anytime... regardless of the weather. Lands. Instant (4) 4 Force of Will. Elves is one of the unique strategies in Legacy in that it can adapt and change role from matchup to matchup. While many other dedicated Prison decks exist in Legacy, none are among the most popular decks in the format. You need to cross a barrier, but once you do it’s very easy and straightforward (Dredge). My Rating: 3.5. Field of Ruin is a great utility card from a recent set. For example, it’s not uncommon to play a turn-1 Ponder, Brainstorm, or Ponder to set up for a turn-2 Counterbalance, and then you have to know which cost to leave on top, and that depends on what your opponent is playing, which means that you have to have at least a passing knowledge of the format so that you can identify the problematic costs you have to stop. The first is that the metagame is always changing. This website is not produced, endorsed, supported, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast. Death & Taxes. Most of your games are short and you take very few actions, so there’s not a lot of complexity. Legacy of the Duelist; Fun decks? In fact, there are cards legal in Legacy that are restricted in Vintage. Their game doesn’t end as quickly with Eldrazi Post as it does with the previous two decks, but your game plan remains the same against everybody—play some lands and accelerate into the biggest Eldrazi you can cast. The actual Gouki core is insanely cheap and can be tech’d into a number of different decks if required. Regardless of how hard they are to play, combo decks are decks that reward practice with that deck way more than practice with MTG in general. How high is the variance between a large sample size of games? Because of this, decks with shifting game plans usually reward general MTG skill and experience rather than knowledge about the one specific deck, so they’re decks that you can pick up if you’ve never played them before if you have the necessary background. HERO Mine. I always play DRS in my B/W Death and Taxes lists. I believe Legacy Dredge is simpler to play than Modern Dredge (sometimes you don’t even cast a spell the entire game), but it’s also more different than anything else. Whilst the elk master has been banned in virtually every format, he is still legal in Legacy. If you’re not a skilled player then I wouldn’t play it. I’m not a fan of banning cards because something might happen. If you are, then we are the place for you. I also believe that gigantic price tags on cards like The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale unfairly advantage a deck like Grixis, which is easier to assemble in paper. User Info: randeng. I just won an auction for 600+ Vs. System cards and I'm in the process of building some fun "Legacy" format theme decks. The biggest argument for banning Deathrite is that the winner’s metagame percentage continues to grow for Deathrite Shaman + Brainstorm decks. Mechanically speaking, the deck takes a bit to get used to, but the combo is actually deterministic a lot of the time (meaning once you start comboing you’re guaranteed to kill, so you don’t have to adapt your thinking based on what you start drawing, like Elves), so that part is not so complicated. Community Rating: 2.74 Bujingi also plays really cool, and unique play style. Pl Deck Player Price; 5 - 0 Goblins Goblins Goblins: basvanopheusden: 411 tix $ 1,610 - 5 - 0 Charbelcher Charbelcher Charbelcher: tensai: 340 tix $ 1,595 - But once you get past that very initial barrier, then the deck basically plays itself every turn of the game, so I think it’s an easy pick up if you have at least some time to practice, regardless of how skilled or experienced of a player you are. RUG Delver is the premier aggro-tempo deck in Legacy… The other thing to consider is that while Grixis Delver may well be the “best deck,” it isn’t by a wide margin. Pro Rating: – Some games you just run over your opponent with cards like Batterskull, Umezawa’s Jitte, and True-Name Nemesis. Your game plan—getting a Griselbrand or an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn in play—is pretty immutable, and something you’re trying to do every game. Slow decks can be powerful. 6. In case you missed 20-11 or 10-6, be sure to take a look at what you’ve missed. Community Rating: 3.1 Legacy (Type 1.5) What is themost fun deck to pilot in Legacy? The silver lining is that Deathrite Shaman seems to create a lot of diversity. It’s also a deck that you can very easily play if you’re experienced with Magic or with blue cards in general. Legacy Plasma Deck: http://imgur.com/iQuYlpl. If you’re a less experienced player who wants to focus on one deck to master, then I don’t recommend any of these because it’s a lot more about thinking about the lines than knowing the lines (whereas I would recommend something like Death and Taxes). level 1 Name a combination of colors that involve blue and there is some flavor of aggro-control. 19. In the spirit of inclusion, I’m going to group some of these decks together rather than have fifteen different Deathrite Shaman + Brainstorm decks on the list. Pro Rating: 3.75 All of the blue decks have both. It wins by simply outlasting most opponents. The deck can kill you quickly and has a great cast of cards to stop opposing decks from going over or underneath. Food Chain Tazri. Pro Rating: 2 I’m an Eternal fan through thick and thin. Brian DeMars has played Magic pretty much since the beginning. Overall, I don’t think Grixis Delver requires specific knowledge of Grixis Delver or specific knowledge of Legacy, but I think you have to be a good player overall to be able to extract enough from the deck to take it to a tournament. Sideboarded games in particular can be a bit challenging, as you now have to play around things like Surgical Extraction or Faerie Macabre, but the main way of beating anything with this deck remains “I hope they don’t have it” or “I hope I can brute force enough reanimation spells through it,” so I don’t think you’ll run into a lot of trouble if you’re a beginner. Search Search all Forums Search this Forum Search this Thread Tools Jump to Forum U/R Delver Remember, any deck on this list is capable of beating any other deck on any given day and the margin separating the 20th ranked deck from the first is fairly small. Still, should Deathrite Shaman get banned? The most difficult deck across all three formats was Modern KCI at 4.59. I asked a group of professional players and the competitive community as a whole (on r/MTGlegacy, so people that play Legacy) to grade each deck based on how much practice/experience they feel is needed to take the deck to a tournament and perform adequately with it. But still competitive. Legacy Eel/Ray Deck: http://imgur.com/hjWoHtc. I’m going to give each deck a score of between 1 and 10 for each of the three categories and add them up. B/R Reanimator is very similar to Red Prison. This is our first view of Oko, Thief of Crowns too. It’s time to start talking about the elephant in the room: Deathrite Shaman is the glue that holds these “good stuff” decks together. 20. To complete the “Tron” of metagame percentage, eyeball test, and winning a big event, it is also worth noting that Grixis took down GP Seattle last week: Everything is cheap and effective. For example, if you tell me “I am starting to play MTG now and I have six months to dedicate to learning a deck,” then I think you are better served by playing a combo deck, no matter how complicated, than a deck like Grixis Delver that is much more nuanced and requires a wider variety of skills. It offers many small decisions, but a lot of the time it’ll forgive you if you get them wrong. With Grixis Delver, you don’t have any card that’s individually as powerful. Should you play a turn-1 Chalice for 1 or a turn-1 Blood Moon, for example? Sultai That left me in the Legacy seat. Legacy Darkrai Deck: http://imgur.com/91sAVVe. At the moment I feel confident that the picture I’ve painted of Legacy is of a format that is dynamic, diverse, and fun to play. Are you a Delver/Bolt deck? 13. In Legacy, it currently takes the form of Miracles, a deck that uses the Miracle cost of Terminus (with Brainstorm and Jace to set it up on key turns) to have access to a 1-mana Wrath of God effect. Grixis Control is still a blue Legacy deck, so it’s never going to be easy, but like the combo decks, the game play is mostly immutable, which by definition makes it easier. Does the deck have a backup plan or transformational sideboard? Commander: General Tazri. Given the raw power of some of the restricted cards, increasing consistency in finding or using them can be very dang… You’re basically working with 7-9 cards throughout the game, and only 2-3 of them matter (because even though the game doesn’t literally end on turns 1 and 2, in reality it basically does, one way or the other). Obviously, Grixis Delver has its free wins also—sometimes you play a Delver of Secrets, flip it, Wasteland your opponent twice, and counter everything they play. That said, once you do have the practice with it, I think it’s less complicated than both Elves and Lands, so I’m giving it a 4.5 to reflect that. ChannelFireball - Magic: The Gathering Strategy, Singles, Cards, Decks. Before I leave you to explore the comments section, I have a few last “food for thought” ideas to throw around. I actually think Grixis Control is a pretty good introductory point for both the blue cards in Legacy and control decks in general. It’s full of tutors, recursion, and game-winning combos. Dragon Stompy A Stoneforge Mystic/Swords to Plowshares deck? Storm Does it matter that the pairing slots into several distinct archetypes and provides a high degree of customization? What makes it a 2.5 for me is that I don’t think you need to “master” it to do well. I also think it’s a deck that you can play if you have experience with the format, since you’ll already know what cards to tutor for even if you don’t have experience with Maverick itself. The decks that play Brainstorm and don’t play DRS are all the most unfair combo decks: Storm, Show and Tell, Miracles, U/R Delver, High Tide, and U/B Reanimator. Stoneblade His career includes a staggering 11 Pro Tour Top 8s with a win at PT San Juan in 2010. Miracles for example, is capable of running an opponent out of gas with extreme efficiency, even if it won’t technically end the game for several more turns. Lands is a solid foil to many of these metagame whales that simply isn’t an option to the average Legacy player. It simply needs to keep an opponent off balance for a couple of turns while its high-power threats: Delver, Gurmag, and Pyromancer, chunk away hit points in the red zone. It’s truly a masterpiece of deck design. Grixis Delver has all the complications of a Stoneblade deck with fewer cards that can win the game by themselves. The second is that your plan B (or C if you consider Natural Order a plan in itself) is actually very viable, as opposed to almost every other combo deck’s plan B. Pro Rating: 2.25 I think one of the hardest things in Magic is when you have to pick a direction—following a direction is much easier. It’s the same principle: If your deck can play Brainstorm, it should. My Rating: 2. There are no doubt other factors at play but these are the big three for me. This will happen with a few other decks down the line too.). It was 5,373 kms into his cross-Canada run, just east of the city limits, where Fox was forced to end his quest to raise money and awareness for cancer research on … If you want to know more and see some different takes on deck difficulty, Siggy, Sam Black, and I also discuss this on our podcast. So, basically a deck that would typically be considered “broken.”. Lands is a busted deck. 8. Community Rating: 3.5 Be the best deckbuilder, and beat the metagame with the biggest MTG decks database, including paper and MTG Arena decks. There are two challenges in B/R Reanimator—mulliganing and sideboarding. I also ranked the decks of Modern. Knight of the ‘totally-casting-him-on-turn-two’ Knight of the White Orchid is a great card. Miracles is also a great example of a clearly tier 1 deck that isn’t spamming Deathrite Shaman. Consistency – How often does the deck draw hands that can execute a winning strategy? Hallmark Billiards carries Brunswick, Olhausen, Plank & Hide, Legacy Pool Tables, Air Hockey Tables, Foosball Table, Shuffle Boards, Pool Cues, Darks, Lighting, Bars, poker chips, Ping Pong Tables, Snooker Tables, Pool Cue Racks, poker tables, Bare Stools & High Quality Outdoor Furniture, and more. I'm playing a nekroz deck, it's strong but it's boring. He provides … Combine Gouki’s with Knightmares to transform your decent budget deck into an expensive deck that can win tournaments with ease. Resilience/Exploitability/Flexibility – Does the deck crumble to sideboard cards? The decks that don’t play Brainstorm but play DRS tend to be (with the exception of Elves) creature decks: Nic Fit, Jund, Death and Taxes. The deck is focused, streamlined, and has a combination of pieces that make it not only inherently powerful, but also flexible and adaptable in a wide array of matchups. Pro Rating: 2.6 Between Flickerwisp, Karakas, Aether Vial, and the tutors, both for creatures and Equipment, there is a lot of knowledge that you need to have that’s specific to that deck. If you’re a good Magic player, you can probably think about things and handle them on the fly. I would much rather play a blue deck without testing than Death and Taxes, even though I gave them the same grade. 17. Thespian’s Stage is a pretty complicated card and once you add stuff like Glacial Chasm, well, you’re off to the races. With the … You can’t just show up with Elves if you’ve never played the deck before regardless of how good of a player you are, which is something I feel you can easily do with the Griselbrand decks. Most of the time you just curve out answers and then you eventually win, and this is true across all of the formats. At the end of the day, decks don’t win tournaments—players do. Nearly every card is a creature or threat in addition to being a combo piece. This can seem strange at first until one realizes that most of the cards that are restricted in Vintage, but not banned in Legacy, are cards that increase consistency. Sort by: Planeswalker (4) 4 Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. Overall I think Miracles requires a little of everything—you have to be experienced with the game, you have to be experienced with Miracles itself, and you have to know the format, but it doesn’t require a lot of any of these things (you only need a small amount of experience to not mess up, unlike decks like Elves or Lands). We are getting to the point where DRS is in as many decks as Brainstorm. My Rating: 2.5. Welcome back to the third part of the Top 20 Decks of Legacy series! Community Rating: 1.78 Here’s the rank from lowest to highest: Community Rating: 1.76 Grixis Delver: 14% My Rating: 3. You want to do the same against everyone every game. Lessons Are you a golf enthusiast? I wouldn’t bat an eye if it did get banned and would understand the reasoning behind it. You also have a lot of tutors and they don’t always get the same thing, so it’s not as easy as just getting the “missing piece” every time. All 6 of these decks pretty much make up 99% of the metagame. If card availability were not a constraint I would predict that Lands would have a larger metagame share that would be taken almost directly from Grixis Delver. Control decks and aggro decks always have a direction, and all you need to do is find the best way to follow it, whereas some other decks (like Grixis Delver, Stoneblade, Drakes, Elves) need you to figure out which direction you’re supposed to go multiple times in a game, and only then can you follow it. The printings of … But I think that Brainstorm is a bigger offender on both charges. 16. Deck of the Day: Manaless Dredge (Legacy) By Eric Froehlich / November 30, 2017 October 10, 2019. If you like playing control decks but you’re intimidated by Miracles I really recommend giving it a try. Dredge is a deck that makes you clear a bar, but once you do then all the games are very similar. as well. ChannelFireball - Magic: The Gathering Strategy, Singles, Cards, Decks. Sneak and Show is a blue deck, which by definition means that it’s at least a little complicated. If that weren’t enough, the deck also has a potent “Tinker/Colossus” combo with Natural Order that can come out of nowhere and end games. These include (but are not limited to): Aggro Loam, Goblin Stompy or Dragon Stompy, Enchantress, Pox, Tezzeret, and MUD. It’s complicated, and I don’t have a clean answer about what should or shouldn’t be done in order to preserve the health and viability of Legacy. Despite all of the evidence that it should or could warrant a banning, I will stand by my opinion: “No.”. I think Elves is a pretty hard deck to play. I wouldn’t play a tournament with Storm unless I had significant practice with it (and in fact I chose not to play a tournament with Storm a while ago because I didn’t think I’d be able to practice enough to play it at a satisfactory level). Two cards that define many builds of functionally similar decks. Maintained daily, you can hit off our mat tees on the upper or lower deck, or hit from our newly renovated grass tees. Those games are very easy, but then in other games you have an absurdly grindy war where any mistake can make you lose, and with this deck you have the opportunity to make a lot of mistakes throughout a game. You have a game plan that you execute basically every game (getting the best big creature possible from a tier list that rarely changes—it’s almost always Griselbrand first), and you have 7-9 cards to execute it with. With Stoneblade, you can sometimes mess up several times and still just cast a Jace, the Mind Sculptor or a True-Name Nemesis equipped with Jitte, and that’ll bail you out of any situation. The deck is a strange combination of combo/control, which I believe to be in the abstract the most powerful type of deck (think Control Slaver, Splinter Twin, Thopter Depths). A Leovold/JTMS deck? You can just throw your hand at the table and win a lot of the time. The deck basically does everything a deck can do—aside from playing Brainstorm and Force of Will, of course. But if these trends continue to play out in a predictable way, format diversity could suffer. For that reason alone, I’d err on the side of caution and say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I enjoy Legacy how it is now and I’ll enjoy Legacy regardless of what they add or subtract from the format. Community Rating: 1.81 Artifact (17) Again, it is a blue deck in Legacy, so it can only be so easy, but being a control deck doesn’t automatically make it harder. This changes depending on what deck you’re playing against, but it’s hard to go completely wrong if you know your opponent (and if you don’t you can just decide which one is better and always lean toward that one). In fact, Terminus is quite effective at sweeping them up for value. Brian plays and enjoys all Constructed and Limited formats but has a particular fondness for Vintage. It had "stop" on it, so we didn't drew any more. Here are the Top 8 Decks from the Legacy Championship! Most of the difficulty in this deck is knowing which “lock” piece to go for. The other side of the coin is that I would also be sympathetic to a person who believes that 1/3 of the metagame is doing the same thing and it seems broken…. Like all formats, there is a banned list for Legacy. Force of Will is not easy to play with, since it can be cast at basically any time, and Brainstorm is one of the hardest cards in Magic to play properly. Dredge It is almost more useful to list the things it can’t do than the things it can! The first is that your combo is a bit different than any other combo, both in principle and mechanically, which means you need experience with the deck itself. I would estimate that it makes up at least 1/3 of an expected field. Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube. Decklist. I would not recommend Lands to anyone who isn’t already experienced with Lands. Payton's Legacy is a stunning private water front year round cottage. Welcome to MTG decks!. You don’t need any experience with Sneak and Show itself or even combo decks as a whole. Regardless of how much Magic you’ve played, it’ll still feel like a shock when you pick up Legacy Dredge. If you make the second-best decision every time in a game, you’re still very likely to win, as it’s not a deck that punishes you much. On a personal level, I enjoy Legacy the way it is and find the quality of the games I play to be high. My issue is that every reason I accept as viable for a Deathrite Shaman banning also applies to Brainstorm: power level and ubiquity across the format. My Rating: 5. The inherent risk is that the format continues to be pulled toward decks that include both Brainstorm and Deathrite Shaman and diversity begins to suffer.
